WHAT EXACTLY IS A DAN GRADE?
A Dan grade is a level of black belt grade.
1st Dan is the first black belt that a person is awarded. Â From then on, we strive to reach the standard of the next Dan grade. Â The highest Dan that can be awarded is a 10th Dan.
It takes a minimum of two years to attain 2nd Dan, a minimum of three years to attain 3rd Dan, a minimum of 4 years to attain 4th Dan, and so on. Â
Therefore, as you can imagine, there are very few 8th, 9th or 10th Dan grades in the karate world!
WHY SHOULD I PRACTISE KARATE?
After the past two difficult years of the Pandemic, we want to encourage others to get fit and active and to be challenged by something new. We have all spent far too much time in our homes, away from others. We feel that now is the time to join a friendly club, gain confidence, make new friends and learn useful skills.
There have been a lot of high profile cases recently in the news regarding women’s safety. It feels good to be able to defend yourself if it is necessary. Karate is excellent self defence. Mental toughness and resilience are great advantages that karate can bring about.
There are so many benefits to karate. It is a superb body workout. It increases your cardiovascular fitness, strengthens and tones your whole body. It is also good for weight loss. It raises your stamina and flexibility levels, and improves balance and mobility. You will also find your energy levels increase over time!

We want to encourage everyone to improve their mood, their vitality and their mental health to cope with everyday life, especially now that we are all emerging from the Pandemic. Karate is a fantastic stress relief. It improves your mental health, self esteem, your focus and your concentration. It is also excellent for honing self discipline in children and adults alike.
WHAT IS SHOTOKAN KARATE?
Shotokan Karate is the style of karate that we practise. Â It was brought to mainland Japan in 1922 by Master Gichin Funakoshi after originating on Okinawa, a small island south of mainland Japan. Â It is widely practised around the world and is an effective form of karate. Â The word "karate" itself means "empty hand" as we learn to use our body to defend and attack.
CAN I KEEP MY CURRENT GRADE IF I HAVE TRAINED IN KARATE BEFORE?
Yes, you can. Â
Your grade will be transferred across and after a period of review you will be invited to grade with our club for your next belt (as agreed with the Senseis)
